cast iron sculpture

Design, manufacture and engineering are integral to the production of art. Tom's work explores the notion of process in relation to these factors, and attempts to illustrate these aspects of production through the finished artwork. He is fascinated by industrial design and manufacture and by using creative and constructive methods and techniques inherent to an industrial process, aims to highlight the importance of them and their placement within modern society.

The process of creation is the artwork itself and the associated techniques such as design, pattern making, mould making, casting, and finishing are all contrasting to a modern obsession with a clean and perfect finished product. Tom's work engages with the act of making by creating a physical representation of the methods and techniques used during manufacture. Tom establishes the idea that construction is the foundation of the product, whatever physical form that product may take.

Tom Fell's work celebrates the skills and achievements involved in industry and he employes traditional techniques and processes to form the basis of his work. He is able to highlight the connection between art and it's production by creating sculpture that allows the viewer to interact with an industrial process. Tom wants to involve the viewer both physically and conceptually by highlighting the aesthetic and engineered qualities of his sculpture.

By producing a sculpture from these processes Tom is able to engage the viewer both in the sculpture as an approachable art form but also with the mechanics and workings of the industry from which it is a product.
