cast iron sculpture

'Surfaces' is a means of displaying the processes of industrial manufacture. The method of production I employ starts with design on a CAD (computer aided design) program, where I am able to measure the virtual space to ensure precision and accuracy. This design is transferred onto block polystyrene that is carved into shape. This method of cutting leaves visible drag marks in the final cast sculpture and is a highlight of the initial stages of the sculpture's life.

By working closely with the client, this initial shape was agreed upon. Tall and wide, it will create a draw towards the rear of the private garden it is to be situated in. The unusual but complementary deep orange colour of the iron will stand out and open up the under used area. After foliage has established around the base, it will seem organic, as if it's presence has dominated for an age.

'Partners' was designed to go at the bottom of a garden and to open up the relatively unused back section creating a feature to draw the eye and body towards it. The garden is an ideal space for a sculpture of this nature, upon contact with the elements the iron corrodes and turns a deep orange colour, which develops and evolves parallel to the life of the sculpture and it's surrounding location, and is a complement to the natural colours of foliage and bedding found in the garden.
